Chainsaw Man Piano Project 2025 – Part 3: JANE DOE
JANE DOE might be my personal favorite song in the entire CSM series, and having the dream combination of Utada Hikaru and Yonezu Kenshi feels almost unreal. I listen to both artists a lot in my free time, so arranging this duet felt a bit like stepping into their artistic musical world.
The biggest challenge was finding the balance between over-arranging and too empty, all while keeping that gentle swing pulse alive. It’s a deceptively fragile song — if you add too much, it collapses; if you add too little, it loses its breath.
● Denji and Reze — a melancholic duet
I kept the melodic ranges consistent with the original duet: Yonezu in the middle register, Utada above.
My favorite moment is in 2:01, where both voices finally meet. The right hand plays both vocal lines simultaneously so their melodies can melt together. It’s such a satisfying moment on the piano — and also bittersweet, because their voices overlap only here. That was their fate: a brief moment together before everything slipped apart.
● Reze’s unreachable hope
Normally I would add a virtuosic flourish for the finale in 3:25, but the message of the song — and the movie — is the tragedy of two people destined never to meet again.
So instead, the ending becomes an elegy for Reze.
The melody rises higher and higher until it almost disappears, mirroring how she ascends beyond Denji’s reach. I always wondered: did she see Denji holding the flower bouquet? What would their first words have been if she had made it to the café?
● Denji left behind
Compare the outro in 4:21 with the intro at the beginning: the upper-layer melody is missing — because of Reze’s sudden absence in Denji’s life.
And unlike most of my arrangements, the final chord doesn’t resolve. It just hangs there, suspended.
Denji is still waiting in the café for Reze — a story without a true ending, mirrored by music that refuses to settle.
You have probably realized already, but I really love this movie.
The final part of my Chainsaw Man Piano Project 2025 is scheduled for next month.
Can you guess which piece it will be?
See you next time!
