Description

► Killed by a drunk driver two days before her 20th birthday. A speeding drunk-driver has been jailed for eight years for causing the death of a teenager who text her friends saying: “I may not survive tonight.” Erin Slane was a passenger in a car being driven by Kyle Patrick, who she knew, when he crashed in Perthshire in September 2024, while he drove at a “grossly excessive speed”. Her last messages to her friends - two days before her 20th birthday - were: "I may not survive tonight. I'm scared. Kyle is steaming.” At 02:05 she wrote again: "Kyle is steaming". Kyle Patrick was 21 at the time. He had visited several pubs that night drinking pints of beer and shots. Shortly afterwards he turned up in his Ford Fiesta ST-3 Turbo at a taxi rank and offered lifts to people waiting in the queue. A 17-year-old boy paid him £10 to take him to nearby Bankfoot before he parked up outside the That Bar pub, where he picked up Erin and her friend in the early hours. Prosecutor Graeme Jessop KC told the court that Patrick was driving at a “grossly excessive speed" along the B9099 Luncarty to Stanley road when he lost control of the car hitting a fence and rolling over several times in a field. He called police after the crash. Erin Slane died at the scene, while another passenger was seriously injured. The survivor, referred to in court as Jane, said in a statement she could not recognise herself in the mirror two days after the accident because of her injuries and that she has continuing psychological trauma from the loss of her close friend. In court Patrick, 23, admitted death by dangerous driving and causing injury to another passenger. The judge, Lord Harrower said: “Erin was 19, about to start university and had her whole life ahead of her.” He said Patrick’s actions had brought “terrible devastation” to the family and that “no sentence of this court can alleviate their anguish.” Patrick has also been banned from driving for 10 years. #5news #ThatBar #carcrash ► Have you subscribed to 5 News?: http://bit.ly/5NewsSub ► Follow 5 News on Twitter to keep up to date with the latest news - https://twitter.com/5_News Message us on Facebook to share your opinion - https://www.facebook.com/c5News See our latest pictures and videos on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/c5news/ ► About 5 News: We bring you the stories that matter to you, from around the world and across the UK. 🎥 We post daily playlists with the biggest news of the day, interviews, special reports and investigations. 📺 Catch us on TV on Channel 5 every weekday 5-6pm 📱 Get in touch with us on WhatsApp at +44 7555 500 501 🎧 Listen to "How Did We Get Here?
