The Messenger ﷺ said: ما مِنكُم رَجُلٌ يُقَرِّبُ وَضوءَه فيَتَمَضمَضُ، ويَستَنشِقُ فيَنتَثِرُ، إلّا خَرَّت خَطايا وجهِه، وفيه وخَياشيمِه، ثُمَّ إذا غَسَلَ وجهَه كما أمَرَه اللهُ، إلّا خَرَّت خَطايا وجهِه مِن أطرافِ لحيَتِه مع الماءِ، ثُمَّ يَغسِلُ يَدَيه إلى المِرفَقَينِ، إلّا خَرَّت خَطايا يَدَيه مِن أنامِلِه مع الماءِ، ثُمَّ يَمسَحُ رَأسَه، إلّا خَرَّت خَطايا رَأسِه مِن أطرافِ شَعرِه مع الماءِ، ثُمَّ يَغسِلُ قدَمَيه إلى الكَعبَينِ، إلّا خَرَّت خَطايا رِجلَيه مِن أنامِلِه مع الماءِ There is no person among you who brings forth water for wudu, then rinses his mouth and sniffs water into his nostrils and blows it out, except that the sins of his face, mouth, and nostrils fall away. Then when he washes his face as Allah commanded him, the sins of his face fall away from the edges of his beard along with the water. Then when he washes his hands up to the elbows, the sins of his hands fall away from his fingertips along with the water. Then when he wipes over his head, the sins of his head fall away from the tips of his hair along with the water. Then when he washes his feet up to the ankles, the sins of his feet fall away from his toes along with the water.” (Sahih Muslim: 832). One word in the Hadith worth pausing on is: خَرَّت, which meaning to fall, to tumble downward. It is the same word used for something collapsing or water rushing down. The Prophet ﷺ did not describe sins as being “removed” in a dry and technical way. He described them as falling away, carried off with the water, flowing down from the body. It’s a very vivid image, every drop of water is not just cleansing, it is taking something away with it.
