Description

In the early months, babies are wired to signal for connection. When a caregiver is consistently unresponsive, infants may initially protest—but over time, some may become quieter or more withdrawn. This isn’t because they no longer need comfort, but because their signals haven’t brought a response (Tronick, 1975; Tronick & Beeghly, 2011). What’s important to understand is that behaviour and biology don’t always match. Research shows that even when infants appear settled on the outside, their internal stress systems can still be activated. Studies on infant stress physiology have found that caregiving quality is closely linked to cortisol patterns, and less responsive care can be associated with elevated or dysregulated stress responses (Gunnar & Donzella, 2002; Laurent et al., 2014). This doesn’t mean parents need to be perfect. But it does remind us of something powerful: ✨ Babies don’t just need sleep—they need connection to feel safe. ✨ And sometimes quiet isn’t the same as calm. Responding to your baby isn’t about creating dependence— it’s how their nervous system learns what safety feels like. 💛 📅👇 Recordings to our 2026 Parenting and Mental Health Summit are on sale now!!
