Kirstie Parker, co-chair of Reconciliation Australia, says she decided to forego January 26 gatherings due to the appearance of neo-Nazi groups at First Nations celebrations. 'When the alleged terrorist attack occurred on the 26th of January in Perth it said to me that our communities are right to be careful about how we hold ourselves,' she said. According to the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute, 63 per cent of Australians felt a sense of belonging in 2020 which dropped to 46 per cent in 2025.
