Introduced in the early 1960s as a Mach 2 carrier-based nuclear bomber, the Vigilante pushed the limits of aviation technology. With cutting-edge systems like one of the first onboard digital computers, early fly-by-wire elements, and advanced navigation and bombing automation, it represented a leap forward in strike aircraft design. Yet despite its performance and sophistication, the Vigilante’s original mission was short-lived. As nuclear strategy shifted toward missile-based deterrence, the aircraft was rapidly reassigned — ultimately finding its true role as the RA-5C reconnaissance platform during the Vietnam War. Flying high-speed intelligence missions over heavily defended territory, the Vigilante became one of the most capable, and most vulnerable, aircraft in the conflict, recording the highest loss rate of any US Navy aircraft type in Vietnam.
