Description
Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra briefs the media on an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 3400 block of Antoine.
Preliminary information:
On Thursday, December 4th at approximately 8:41 a.m., HPD patrol officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with expired registration. The driver of the vehicle pulled over and gave the officer his license and proof of insurance. When he ran the license, the officer discovered the driver had a felony warrant for family violence, so he called for back-up. When back-up arrived, the officer approached the car to take the suspect, a Black male about 33 years old, into custody. The suspect rolled the window up and drove away. A brief vehicle pursuit ensued with the suspect firing a gun back at the pursuing officers. At Antoine and W 34th, the suspect lost control of his vehicle and struck a pole, flipping upside down. The suspect exited the car and ran, firing his weapon at the police officers who pursued him. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Two females were in the car with the suspect. One had a felony theft warrant for her arrest. She was taken into custody. No officers were injured.
