Description
Since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, India's Navy has quietly depended on Ukrainian gas turbine engines built by Zorya-Mashproekt to power its warships. But in 2022, this dependency turned into India's biggest naval crisis — because the two countries that built and powered India's warships went to war with each other. On one side was Russia, building our warships. On the other side was Ukraine, building the engines for those very same warships.
When Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, Ukraine stopped supplying engines to Russia. India's warships under construction at Russia's Yantar Shipyard became nothing more than empty steel shells. India pulled off a masterstroke — buying engines directly from Ukraine and shipping them to Russia itself. For the first time in history, components from two enemy nations were working together inside the same warship.
Then in February 2022, Russia's missiles struck the very Zorya factory that supplied India's engines. Ukraine was furious at India for buying discounted Russian oil. Russia's deliveries were getting delayed. And over 30 Indian warships remained completely dependent on Ukrainian engines. Yet Ukraine never cancelled its 400+ military contracts with India — because they desperately needed India's dollars to fund their war.
Today, India has finally begun breaking free. Bharat Forge acquired 51% stake in Zorya's Indian arm. BHEL successfully indigenised 40 MW marine gas turbines. And INS Tamal — the last warship ever to be built for India on foreign soil — has joined the Navy. Every future Indian warship will now be built entirely in India.
