Australia is at WAR Over Its Identity 🇦🇺

January 26th, 2026 - Australia Day This day is meant to be a celebration of Australia. For many years, it was totally uncontroversial and widely celebrated by the public. Every major city had a parade with tens of thousands of attendees. Roughly 8-10 years ago, Australia Day started to be moralized as a bad day to celebrate Australia. The historical significance of January 26th is that it commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet of British settlers in 1788. Many people see this as being highly offensive to the Aboriginal peoples of Australia and want the date changed. Many people believe this is a reasonable course of action. Although the Australian Government has legally kept Jan 26th "Australia Day" on the calendar, many cities (like Melbourne) have banned Australia Day parades, claiming it's "not a date to celebrate". However, many Australians feel there is something else at play. They are no longer just hearing chants of "change the date"... they're hearing chants of "Death to Australia" and "The Colony Will Fall" along with 100+ year old war memorials being desecrated or destroyed in name of taking "land back". According to IPA (Institute of Public Affairs), support for an Australia Day on January 26th has been skyrocketing. As of the start of 2026, it's at 76%. So, if the vast majority of Australians in a democratic nation WANT "Australia Day" on January 26th... why are public celebrations being cancelled without their consent? No vote, no national referendum, absolutely no say. To understand all this, I interviewed the public in Melbourne's suburbs and documented the 'March for Australia' rally in the city.
