Being the cool blind aunt, proving to your niece that having a disability doesn’t have to hold you back. I’ve been through a lot to get here…
Over the years, I’ve told myself over and over that I wouldn’t be able to be a good auntie or even a good mum someday because of my disability. Maybe because I’ve felt that public perception of disability, although improving somewhat, feels like we’re going backwards sometimes.
I see the comments every time I upload a video about being a mum one day and there’s so much ableism. I hear the stories from my disabled mum friends about how their child’s friend from school’s mum won’t let them play round at my friend’s child’s house because their parent is blind. I see how people talk to Ollie instead of me and imply just because of my blindness I am somehow less capable to be a parent.
I think we have a long way to go and every day I’m getting closer and closer to my fertility journey I’m going to continue to be a great auntie, continue to show you that you can be a responsible guardian if you have a disability. So if any of you are out there struggling with your mental health in this too you know you’re not alone ❤️

Lucy’s niece waits at the top of a small rock climbing wall while Lucy climbs it, at the end they both go down a slide together. Text over the top reads ‘Being the cool blind aunt, proving to your niece that having a disability doesn’t have to hold you back. I’ve been through a lot to get here…’
