Description

A nocturnal field mouse [either Large Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus, family Muridae) or Small Japanese field mouse (Apodemus argenteus, family Muridae)] was visiting the feeder box full of sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus, family Asteraceae). Out of the blue, the mouse jumped high out of the feeder box in surprise and bolted away along the fallen tree to the safe hideout. Maybe the mouse saw a dangerous predator, such as an owl or a marten, coming to hunt. The amazing escape reaction was replayed at 3x slow-motion (0:12-). It was not until 2 hours 10 minutes later, the mouse came back again to the feeder site. After running back and forth nervously along the decayed tree to make sure the coast was clear, the timid mouse settled in the feeder box to forage for uneaten sunflower seeds. Captured with my old trailcam in the evening (around 18:30 PM) of early-November 2024 in Japan. For a full story (text in Japanese); https://sigma-nature-vlog.blogspot.com/2026/01/blog-post_613.html
