Description

When I walked around the shore of a montane pond, Dark-spotted frogs (aka black-spotted pond frog, and black-spotted frog; Pelophylax nigromaculatus, family Ranidae) jumped from the shoreline into the pond to escape from me. After a while, the frogs ascended from the bottom of the pond, and peered out the surroundings from the water surface on alert. As soon as I moved around or waved my arms, the dark-spotted frog quickly turned about and dived deep to escape from danger. The moments of surfacing and emergency diving were also recorded at 240-fps high-speed movie or 8x slow-motion (0:09-). Captured in the sunny midafternoon (around 15:10 PM) of late-May 2026 in Japan.
