Footage released from Iran showed an F-14A Tomcat landing near Isfahan during a window of heavy US strikes, which Iranian-linked reporting tied to a patrol searching for incoming US Tomahawk cruise missiles on the night of June 10-11. It offered one of the clearest signs yet that at least part of the world's last Tomcat fleet is still flying in the war. The F-14 was built by the United States during the Cold War to defend Navy carrier groups from massed missile attacks, and Iran is purportedly the only country still operating it, with airframes bought under the pre-revolution monarchy. Its AN/AWG-9 radar was built to track 24 targets at once, and its AIM-54 Phoenix missile was designed to intercept cruise missiles. The subsonic Tomahawk is slower than the Soviet missiles the jet was built to stop, though its low-altitude flight still makes interception hard.
