Description
Every child has the right to learn, but that right has been taken away from most children in the Gaza Strip.
For the third year in a row, there is no formal education in Gaza. Homes have been turned into rubble, so schools have been turned into shelters. More than 90 percent of Gaza's school facilities need major rehabilitation or full reconstruction.
Students share fond memories of going to school and mourn classmates who were killed in the war. "What made me cry was remembering my friends. I've lost some of them," says Rama, 15. "We used to be very excited for school. We'd go buy school supplies and buy new clothes. But sadly, in Gaza I'm not sure if I'll be alive tomorrow, unfortunately."
UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram describes some of UNICEF's work to get children back into the classroom, including setting up 88 temporary learning spaces around the Gaza Strip, serving more than 43,000 children.
UNICEF needs to expand these services so more of Gaza's children can have a place to play and learn and just be a child for a while.
But most of all, children in Gaza need a permanent ceasefire now.
