Earlier that morning, this violent individual—who spoke no English and was actively breaching a legal ban from entering Sheffield City Centre—had already attempted to steal from a nearby high street shop. Despite his city ban and his morning offence, he was left completely unmonitored to loiter in the area for over an hour. When I arrived to peacefully film local history, he approached me smiling, spat, and got nasty. He pretended to walk away, but as I turned my camera back on to express my disbelief, he turned around and launched a sudden, unprovoked attack, punching me around the face. The fact that a known, banned criminal can commit a crime in the morning and loiter openly in a known drug and flash mob hotspot for an hour proves my point: we drastically need permanent, proactive policing here to intercept offenders before innocent people get hurt.
