Did you know that each year Little Penguins go through what is known as a catastrophic molt and lose all of their feathers?! This vital but challenging process is where they lose their waterproofing, forcing them ashore to fast for weeks while growing new feathers for insulation and swimming! They build up fat reserves beforehand, sometimes doubling their weight, to survive the inability to hunt or swim effectively during this uncomfortable, vulnerable period of extreme hunger and heat.
