Description
Jethro Tull — Songs From The Wood (Live in USA, 1977).
This is renaissance fair prog rock… and I mean that as a compliment.
Multiple sections. Sudden shifts. Medieval a cappella vocals (the opening harmonies are actually a backing track). Then without warning, it drops into heavy bass and drums that are agile, unpredictable, and constantly moving.
From a drum-teacher perspective, this is one of those performances that looks playful on the surface but is brutally demanding underneath.
The groove never truly settles.
The phrasing is elastic.
The transitions are unforgiving.
And the margin for error is tiny.
Andy Edwards (IQ) once said this is the song he’d be most afraid of performing live — and after analysing it, that makes complete sense. You’re juggling feel, form, ensemble awareness, and historical absurdity… all at once.
This performance is also why the band had hand cymbals with them on tour — texture, articulation, and colour matter here just as much as timekeeping.
This isn’t about chops.
It’s about awareness, restraint, and surviving inside controlled chaos.
