Upon hearing Jonah’s warning, the people—from the greatest to the least—proclaim a fast and put on sackcloth. Seeing their turn from evil, God repents of the evil He threatened and does not carry it out. -The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 51): A heartfelt plea for renewal: "A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn". -The Holy Gospel (Luke 11:29-32): As the crowds gather, Jesus declares that this "evil generation" seeks a sign, but no sign will be given except the Sign of Jonah. He warns that the people of Nineveh and the Queen of the South will rise at the judgment to condemn those who fail to recognize that "something greater than Jonah" and "something greater than Solomon" is here. May the fruit of good works we undertake this Lent renew our minds and prepare us for the lasting light of eternity.
