Australian Raven Chatter

this was Marcel around the last week in august and is being fed less than half an hour after his last guts session & this type of behavior has become the norm in the past week or so.not long after being fed by me one of the parents stands near him,at this point Marcel assumes a squat/crouch position beneath the adult bird with his beak open and upwards to accept food which is the norm for young birds still being fed by the parents which goes on for between 6-12 months.what is unusual is that Marcel come to me again after this looking for more food which has made me wonder if the adults maybe removing food from his gut rather than putting there?on one such occasion following one of these interactions it was close enough to seen something sticking out of the end of the adults beaks whilst at the same time Marcel walked away gagging or retching which i had never seen before.given Marcel size and healthy appearance maybe the parents have decided to get in on the act?they are very smart birds as all the literature says and are quick to exploit whatever can be exploited. Marcel was found on the ground in the last week of july after a very stormy night,after ringing a few places i was instructed to take him to specific vet surgery where i was advised that he was a raven,healthy,unlikely to have fallen to ground & he was a fledgling & " should be returned to where he was found his parents will look after him ". unfortunately this was not the case and it was 4/5 days before the parents came near him,he also had a talon missing from a rear toe that became quite swollen & infected in the weeks that followed needing treatment,it was paw paw ointment that cleared it up after having no success with other conventional treatments.Although the only sure fire way to accurately identify the gender of a raven is by blood/dna test Marcel has been declared a male for a number of reasons with the primary one coming from my 15 yr old daughter who has declared that " that bird has to be a male.because its just so annoying " fortunately she avoids Marcel otherwise he might think his name is/was " stupid bird " admittedly the poor kid was swooped by a maggie as a five year old & it appears that it has left her quite scarred. .
