Description
Afghanistan's long winters are beautiful, but they can be deadly. For families living in remote parts of the country, the winter months are a fight for survival.
In Nuristan in the eastern part of the country, many children don't have enough to eat, says UNICEF Afghanistan Chief of Communication Daniel Timme. Lack of nutritious food weakens their immune systems, leaving them extremely vulnerable to cold-related diseases like pneumonia.
To help children make it through the winter, UNICEF delivers warm clothing and blankets. Cash transfers help parents improve their shelter and afford heating fuel. UNICEF nutrition teams distribute food supplements, teach families the importance of a balanced diet, screen children for malnutrition and provide treatment with therapeutic food.
"We want all children here to be strong enough to make it through this difficult wintertime," Timme says. "For this, UNICEF needs more support." Please donate.
