Mould testing technician Jess Ward told Yahoo Lifestyle that washing machines can be breeding grounds for mould because people tend to close the machine’s door before it has a chance to dry. She explained, “Moisture commonly sits around the detergent tray, rubber seal, internal drum and filter area.” “If the door and detergent tray are closed straight after a wash, that moisture can remain trapped inside.” Jess said that a “simple habit” to prevent mould growth is to leave the door of a front-loading washing machine open until you can see that the moisture has evaporated. She also recommended to regularly wipe down the drum’s rubber seal, run a frequent drum-cleaning cycle, and remove the detergent tray to let it dry out as well.
