Nottingham inquiry finds 'RACISM FEARS' could be behind 'two-tier' approach to knife rampage killer

The mother of a university student stabbed to death by “monster” Valdo Calocane believes a dread of being branded racist led to the death of three people in which “every single agency failed - without exception”. Emma Webber, mother of Barnaby Webber, 19, claimed the paranoid schizophrenic had evaded justice and was not dealt with properly in part due to the “fear” of being accused of “stigma and bias” towards the knifeman. Barnaby was killed alongside his friend Grace O'Malley-Kumar, also 19, in the early hours of June 13 2023 while they were walking home from a night out at the end of their first year of studies at Nottingham University. Calocane was wielding a rucksack of weapons when he butchered the teenagers in an unprovoked assault, before stabbing 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates and using his van to try to murder three pedestrians. Emma Webber believes the systemic failings in the Nottingham case have clear parallels to the murder of Henry Nowak, a case that has led to claims of “two-tiered policing” in the UK. “The fear of stigma and bias was placed above safety and duty”, she said of Calocane's crimes. An inquiry into the attacks, which lasted more than three months and heard from 164 witnesses, finished on Friday and chairwoman Her Honour Deborah Taylor is expected to report back with her findings and recommendations next year. On Monday, the families of the three victims who died held a press conference in London where they demanded accountability for the failures – pointing out that nobody has been disciplined over repeated failures to halt Calocane before his deadly rampage.
