The FAA completely shut down airspace over El Paso overnight and didn’t tell ANYONE why.
You’ve got members of Congress saying they weren’t notified, local officials saying they didn’t know what was going on, local military leadership reportedly wasn’t told either…
You even have reports that medical evac helicopters couldn’t take off for the next 10 days – which wasn’t even the case during 9/11. CNN saying this “has no modern precedent.”
Officially, the FAA only cited “special security reasons” and classified El Paso and a nearby section of New Mexico as “National Defense Airspace,” So you had a lot of people thinking Trump was about to make good on his promise to invade Mexico and go after cartels there,
But now you have Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy saying the shutdown was driven by Mexican cartel drones that breached U.S. airspace. Saying the Pentagon took action to neutralize them and that airspace is open again – even though it had been scheduled to be shut down until February 20th.
And that’s key because you have reports that the FAA acted because it couldn’t assure civilian flight safety. With an anonymous congressional official saying the FAA and DOD are “not in clear communications with each other.”
