Such a tragedy that on both instances of human arrival to New Zealand (Māori and European) the beautiful native forests, wetlands and scrublands got decimated. Forest cover went down from 85% to 53% from the early 1200s through to 1840, and then from 53% down to 33%, which has remained the case up until today. For all of the reputation Aotearoa New Zealand has for being a clean and green country, our history and current practices certainly don't show for it.
