Description
In this follow-up to my first trip, I return to Lake Unknown — a remote alpine lake suspended in a hidden hanging valley above the Dart River near Glenorchy, New Zealand. With no trails and barely any recorded history, it’s a place that’s remained almost untouched and unexplored for over a century.
This time, I climb up the dry creek bed again, but instead of turning back, I set up an overnight camp right on the lake’s edge. From there, I explore the surrounding basin — I summit Minos Peak behind with a panoramic view over Lake Unknown, Mt Nox, Mt Chaos.
The next day I head further past the dramatic cliffs at the front of the lake to check out the waterfall, have a look at a route up Mt Nox and get a great view over the Dart River far below.
