Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's ruling Liberal Democratic Party blew away the rest of the pack in the Feb. 8 lower house election, but one upstart party also made significant gains. Team Mirai, founded a year ago, won 11 seats in the proportional representation section of the poll. Its stance of advocating technology-focused and other innovative reforms is resonating with a growing number of voters. The party's manifesto emphasized AI-powered citizen engagement, digital democracy and the use of modern tech tools to ensure no one is left behind. Instead of jumping on the bandwagon of parties advocating a cut in the consumption tax rate, Team Mirai went a different way, pushing for lower income taxes to encourage larger families – the more kids you have, the less you pay. Leader Takahiro Anno is an AI engineer and entrepreneur born in 1990. After graduating from the University of Tokyo and founding several tech startups, he transitioned into politics with an independent bid in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial election, where he garnered more than 150,000 votes. He has been likened to the Japanese version of Taiwan's Audrey Tang.
