Grey Backgrounds & Gels: The Ultimate Color Combo with Gavin Hoey

A grey background isn’t dull, it’s one of the most powerful tools you can use in a small studio. In this video, photographer Gavin Hoey shows you how a single grey background can become any color you want using nothing more than colored gels and good lighting control. Once Gavin has his classic “No flash, no photo” exposure locked in he runs through how a basic gel can transform a grey background with a splash of color. He also explains that if you get your light placement wrong, the color you hoped for will look washed out and weak. With everything set up, Gavin takes you through two photo sessions with his model, Chloe. The first combines the models red dress with a red gel to make a set of images with a strong sense of intentional color. Next Gavin adds some curtains, or rather fabric that looks like curtains, to his small home studio. Once again he adds a colorful gel to his Flashpoint flash and transforms the grey fabric into green, giving his final photos a color palette with a festive feel.
