The original church opened in 1869, and for 34 years to 1903 served as Pro-Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Westminster. That building was destroyed by bombing in 1940.
This present re-built church was completed in 1958, to designs by Adrian Gilbert Scott (grandson of Sir George Gilbert Scott and brother to Sir Giles Gilbert Scott).
The 1930s entrance screen by Joseph Goldie who also designed St James's, Spanish Place, London, completed in 1890.
It has been a Grade II listed building since 2016.

Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1880 – 1960) was a British architect known for his work on Battersea Power Station, Liverpool Cathedral, and designing the iconic red telephone box.
His father was an architect, the son of Sir (George) Gilbert Scott, a more famous architect, known for designing the Albert Memorial and the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station.
