The sign outside says halal butcher. But they are selling clothes inside. The label and the reality are two completely different things.
Ousama Alshurafa uses this simple and slightly absurd image to make a point that the Quran makes directly. Calling yourself something and actually being that thing are not the same.
Allah addresses this in a verse that is as clarifying as it is humbling. When the Bedouins said we believe, Allah corrected them immediately. Do not say you believe. Say instead that you have submitted. Because iman has not yet entered your hearts.
That distinction is not a technicality. It is everything. Islam as an external practice, the label, the identity, the cultural belonging, can exist without iman having taken root in the heart. And deen without iman at its core is exactly like that sign outside. It announces something that is not actually happening inside.
Ousama's call is not to abandon the label but to close the gap between it and the reality. Deen requires qualities, not just declarations. The work is internal. The iman has to actually enter the heart, settle there, and begin shaping how a person thinks, chooses, and lives.
A label on the outside that does not match what is on the inside helps nobody, least of all the person wearing it.
