THIS PRESENT EVIL WORLD A Pauline Warning in the Dispensation of Grace Opening Text “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:” — Galatians 1:4 Paul does not merely say the world is “troubled” or “confused.” He calls it: “this present evil world.” The system of this world is not neutral toward God. It is organized in rebellion against the truth of the Creator. 1. SATAN IS THE GOD OF THIS WORLD “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” — 2 Corinthians 4:4 Notice carefully: • “god” with a small “g” • he blinds minds • especially concerning truth This world system is under spiritual deception. Paul also says: “Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:” — Ephesians 2:2 The world has a “course.” A direction. A flow. And behind that course is a spiritual prince: Satan. 2. THE WORLD SYSTEM DENIES GOD AS CREATOR One of the clearest evidences of this present evil world is the relentless denial of God as Creator. The world system promotes: • evolution • naturalism • atheism • materialism • the Big Bang as ultimate origin • millions and billions of years without God Instead of: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 The world says: • creation happened by accident • life evolved from non-life • order came from chaos • intelligence came from randomness But Scripture says: “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” — Hebrews 11:3 And again: “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible…” — Colossians 1:16 The issue is not merely “science.” The deeper issue is spiritual rebellion against the Creator. 3. THE WORLD GLORIFIES MAN’S WISDOM ABOVE GOD Modern education often trains people to memorize information without seeking truth from God. Paul warned about this long ago: “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” — Colossians 2:8 And again: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,” — Romans 1:22 The world praises intellectual pride while rejecting the plain testimony of Scripture. Children are taught from the earliest years: • man evolved from animals • the Bible is myth • creation is primitive thinking • truth is relative • man is the measure of all things But the believer knows: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:” — Psalms 111:10 Without God, knowledge becomes corrupted. 4. SATAN WORKS THROUGH DECEPTION Satan rarely appears openly. He works through: • confusion • counterfeit wisdom • corrupted religion • worldly systems • entertainment • false doctrine • pride Paul warns: “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” — 2 Corinthians 11:14 The danger is not always obvious evil. Often the deception looks sophisticated, intellectual, scientific, religious, educated, or enlightened. But if it denies: • God as Creator • the authority of Scripture • the gospel of grace • the Lord Jesus Christ then it is part of the rebellion of this present evil world. 5. THE NATURAL MAN CANNOT RECEIVE THE THINGS OF GOD “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him…” — 1 Corinthians 2:14 That explains why many mock: • creation • the Bible • salvation by grace • resurrection • eternal truth The lost world sees these things as foolishness.
