Description
In Afghanistan, Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious disease affecting sheep and goats, has long threatened rural livelihoods. Livestock are central to food, income and resilience, yet outbreaks, which impact up to 70 percent of animals with high mortality, can devastate families already facing compounding climate and economic shocks.
Between 2024 and 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) led a nationwide vaccination campaign, reaching over 9 million animals across more than 780 000 families, with support from the Asian Development Bank and the United Kingdom.
This concerted effort has brought Afghanistan close to eliminating PPR, strengthening food security, improving nutrition and building resilience among livestock-keeping communities.
