Mount Aso’s alert level has been raised by JMA after a sharp increase in volcanic earthquakes and SO₂ gas emissions at Nakadake crater. Aso sits in Kyushu, Japan, inside the Beppu-Shimabara Graben, near the Futagawa and Hinagu fault zones, and is influenced by the Philippine Sea Plate subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate along the Nankai Trough and Ryukyu Trench system.
