To earn a CD title, a dog must: Earn three qualifying scores Score at least 170 out of 200 points Qualify under at least two different judges Pass all required exercises in the Novice class Exercises Required for the CD Title 1. Heel on Leash and Figure Eight The dog must heel on the handler’s left side while on leash. The exercise includes: Normal heeling pattern Left turns, right turns, and halts Figure-eight pattern around two people Points possible: 40 2. Stand for Examination (on leash) The handler places the dog in a stand position and leaves the dog. The judge lightly examines the dog while the handler stands several feet away. The dog must remain standing without moving. Points possible: 30 3. Heel Free (off leash) Same as heel on leash, but performed without the leash. The dog must maintain position and attention while off leash. Points possible: 40 4. Recall The dog is left in a sit position while the handler walks away. When called, the dog must: Come directly to the handler Sit in front Finish to heel position on the handler’s left side Points possible: 30 5. Sit Stay — Get Your Leash Dogs are lined up in a group. The handler leaves the dog in a sit position and walks across the ring to get the leash. The dog must remain sitting until the handler returns. Points possible: 30 6. Down Stay — One Minute (group exercise) Dogs lie down in a group. The handler leaves the dog for one minute and then returns. The dog must remain down and under control. Points possible: 30 Scoring System Total possible score: 200 points Minimum qualifying score: 170 points Must pass all exercises Must earn 3 qualifying scores Must qualify under at least 2 different judges What the CD Title Represents A dog with a CD title has demonstrated: Reliable basic obedience Off-leash control Stability around other dogs Ability to work under trial pressure Foundation-level competition training The CD title is the first step in AKC obedience competition.
