In this episode of Mazda Discovers, Erik Hedenfalk travels through France in the Mazda CX-30 to meet Eloïse Baro, a master mosaicist working across traditional restoration and contemporary creation. Eloïse trained at a mosaic school in Italy, learning classical techniques over three years before developing her own approach, using upcycled materials like broken rock, seashells and pebbles found in nature. Her process begins with the andamento, the flow of the design, then moves through colour selection, cutting individual tesserae by hand, and placing them piece by piece. Her restoration work includes historic monuments such as the Basilica Notre-Dame de la Daurade in Toulouse, while her contemporary pieces draw on patterns found in nature: leaf veins, cracks in dry earth, plants growing across stone. Reaching her workshop and the sites she restores means driving through the French landscape, a journey that shapes the rhythm of her work and the episode itself.
