Could Australia be sitting on one of the largest untapped oil resources in the world? Beneath the remote deserts of Western Australia lies the Canning Basin, a massive sedimentary basin covering more than 530,000 square kilometres. Larger than Victoria and even larger than Spain, this enormous geological province contains proven oil fields, world-class source rocks, ancient reef systems and one of Australia's greatest unresolved petroleum mysteries.
In this video, we explore the geology of the Canning Basin and investigate why petroleum geologists remain fascinated by its potential. Oil has already been discovered and produced from fields such as Ungani and Blina, proving that the basin's petroleum system works. But despite decades of exploration, much of the basin remains lightly tested compared to major oil provinces such as the Permian Basin in Texas, the Bakken Formation in North Dakota, or Australia's own Gippsland Basin.
We'll examine how oil forms in sedimentary basins, how source rocks generate hydrocarbons, how oil migrates through the subsurface, and how geological traps can create conventional oil fields. You'll also learn why the discovery of unconventional shale oil transformed the global energy industry and why formations once considered too tight to produce became some of the most productive oil fields on Earth through horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
The Goldwyer Formation has become one of the most intriguing targets in Australian petroleum geology. Some estimates suggest Australia's major shale basins may collectively contain hundreds of billions of barrels of oil in place, with the Canning Basin considered one of the most prospective contributors to these resource estimates. But how much of that oil is actually recoverable remains one of the biggest unanswered questions in Australian energy exploration.
Using detailed geological cross-sections and petroleum system diagrams, we'll explore the difference between oil in place and recoverable oil, why those numbers can differ dramatically, and how even a small recovery factor can potentially translate into billions of barrels of producible oil. We'll also look at the ancient Devonian reef complexes that once formed part of Australia's prehistoric tropical seas and examine why similar reef systems have become major petroleum reservoirs elsewhere in the world.
Is the Canning Basin Australia's forgotten oil frontier? Could it eventually become a major unconventional oil province? Or has its potential already been overstated? Join us as we investigate one of the largest and least understood petroleum systems in Australia.

🌏 About OzGeology
The core mission of OzGeology is to make geology exciting, accessible, and inspiring for everyone. Instead of presenting rocks and earth science as dry or overly academic, OzGeology brings stories of the planet to life, revealing how every mountain, mineral, and landscape tells part of Earth’s grand adventure. The goal is to help people see the world differently, to understand the dynamic forces shaping Australia and beyond, and to spark curiosity in the next generation of geologists. Through engaging storytelling, field exploration, and clear explanations, OzGeology turns the study of our planet into a journey of discovery rather than a classroom lecture.
