In this video Filmmaker Sum Ting Wong shares his advice on technically perfect cinematography when it comes to using Film Halation 🎥
Halation is that soft glow you sometimes see around bright areas in film images. It happens when light hits the emulsion layer of the film, passes through, reflects off the film base and bounces back. Usually creating a reddish aura around highlights. It’s a beautiful imperfection, born from the physical limitations of celluloid.
If you’re trying to understand what makes film look like film, halation is a big piece of the puzzle. But if you’re like me and like to break the rules: Try to shift the halation hue into the greens for something..well technically incorrect but somehow magically aesthetic.
