Description

A changing climate has an array of direct and indirect effects on human health and wellbeing, from injury and death caused by extreme weather events to food insecurity, novel diseases, and mental health impacts. To mark the launch of the 2024 MJA-Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, Melbourne Climate Futures and the University of Melbourne were pleased to host a panel of experts who discussed its findings and analysed the implications for the year ahead. Thank you to our speakers – Professor Sant-Rayn Pasricha, Dr Selina Namchee Lo, Ms Rebekkah Markey-Towler, Mr Arthur Wyns, and Professor Paul Beggs – for sharing their expertise at the event. The session was opened by the Hon Ged Kearney MP and moderated by Professor Kathryn Bowen. Their contributions strengthened the dialogue on building resilient, equitable, and sustainable futures. Published annually, the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change is an international, multidisciplinary collaboration dedicated to monitoring the evolving health profile of climate change and providing an independent assessment of the delivery of commitments made by governments worldwide under the Paris Agreement.
