Amidst the Iran-US conflict, a Western-backed resolution targeting Iran was introduced in the UN Security Council. The resolution sought a discussion within the Council regarding Iran's nuclear program. However, Russia and China acted as a shield for Iran, effectively protecting it from the resolution. European nations cited Resolution 2231—which governs Iran's nuclear program—to call for an immediate discussion on the matter in the Security Council. In contrast, Russia and China argued that the provisions of Resolution 2231 concerning Iran had expired in October 2025; therefore, the Security Council was under no obligation to deliberate on Iran's nuclear dossier. It is worth noting that the meeting had been convened at the request of European nations. Although Russia and China had previously expressed objections to the meeting, the matter proceeded to a vote. The resolution received 11 votes in favor, while two members—Russia and China—voted against it, effectively exercising their veto power; two other members abstained.
