Description
► Within minutes a nice day at the beach on the Basque coast turned bad – howling 70 km/h winds stirred up a ‘tsunami cloud’ sending parasols and inflatables flying and beachgoers running for cover.
In less than 10 minutes, temperatures plummeted to 15C on Sunday, as swimmers were enjoying highs of 38C.
Video footage shows people blanketed in sand, along the usually sun-drenched shores of Hendaye Biarritz, in France.
The weather phenomenon, called an ‘Enbata’, is a sudden, violent coastal storm with strong west or northwest winds is common in the region.
Known in French as a ‘galerne’, it occurs when a rapid influx of cool maritime air causes temperatures to suddenly and significantly drop.
