Description

Chapter 4 of the Building AI Agent Harnesses with Strands Agents course. This chapter is about making the agent's work visible while it's happening, not just dumping a final answer after 15 seconds of silence. Strands fires events at every stage of the agent loop: when text tokens stream in, when a tool call starts, when it finishes, when a cycle completes. Callbacks let you hook into those events and do something with them. Stream tokens to the UI. Show a "searching your orders..." status when a tool fires. Log cycle counts. Cut the agent off if it's looping. This course teaches developers how to build AI agents and agent harnesses using the open-source Strands Agents SDK. The course starts by teaching what the difference between an agent and agent harness is, and progresses from fundamental concepts (the agent loop, model providers, tools) through intermediate patterns (hooks, plugins, steering, conversation management) to advanced multi-agent orchestration (agents-as-tools, graph workflows, agent swarms) and finally production operations (guardrails, observability, evaluation, cloud deployment).
