Election Nightmare: Labour “Standards” Lie Falls Apart

Keir Starmer’s Labour is scrambling to fill local election candidates, exposing how the “standards” pitch has collapsed into “anyone will do.” Right, so Keir Starmer’s Labour is going into May’s local elections with a problem you he Can’t spin or bluff his way out of, because it’s not about policy, it’s not about messaging, it’s about who the heck is going to even stand for him. An email has gone out to Labour members listing vacancies for candidates to stand that the party has still been unable to fill, but it gave something rather significant away, because said email includes the line “no experience required”, which is what you say when you’re not choosing the best, you’re trying to stop the ballot paper looking half-empty. So much for Starmer’s line about only wanting quality candidates these days then! In Croydon, selections have been extended while whole parts of the borough still don’t have named Labour candidates, and taken together, this isn’t a confidence story, it’s a party trying to plug gaps with whoever will say yes. Starmer’s whole pitch inside Labour was “standards”, control, discipline, the machine, the grown-ups taking over, and now the same machine can’t get ordinary people to wear their rosette on the doorstep come rain or shine. So the question isn’t whether Labour has a rough set of May local elections, it’s what it means when a leadership built on control runs out of volunteers. Right, so Keir Starmer is walking into the May local elections with his party asking for bodies, not brilliance, and that is the part that cannot be hidden behind a press line or a spreadsheet. Local elections in England are happening on Thursday 7 May, and the job in front of Labour is simple on paper: put up candidates in every ward, campaign, and try not to get completely wiped off the map. A leaked email from Jarrow and Gateshead Labour Party has gone out urging members to “seriously consider” putting their names forward in South Tyneside, and it has spelled out vacancies while saying “no experience is required”. LBC has described party insiders in the North East saying selections have been opened up to people with “no experience”, and it has described staff being pushed in as paper candidates just to appear on the ballot.
