The 2019 Act had recognized a broad spectrum of identities, including transgender men and women, genderqueer individuals, intersex persons, and socio-cultural identities such as kinnar, hijra, aravani, and jogta. It also acknowledged the right to self-identify one's gender, although it required certification from a district magistrate—something that was already criticized as being against the spirit of the NALSA judgment.
