Description
Personally the coolest car of this year's edition of Bernina Gran Turismo, an event born in 2014 with the aim of keep the memory of the legendary Swiss Bernina hillclimb race of 1929 and 1930 alive. This Ford Mustang is a LX Coupe version from the beginning of 1990s. Produced from 1979 to 1993, Ford's third-gen pony car is more commonly referred to as a Fox Body given the fact that they were built around the company's Fox platform.
I know little about the car you see in this video. From the first minute I saw it, it gave me the impression that it had been built with the simple style of the Nascars of the early '80s in mind, but maybe it's just the livery that makes me think about it. The engine is still based on the original Ford 302 (4.9/5.0L) but displacement has been increased to 5.9-liter. A straight x-pipe dual side exhaust system has also been fitted.
Listen to the naturally aspirated V8 engine roaring up the beautiful Swiss hillclimb pass!

With a slight refresh among the organizers, this year's edition of Bernina Gran Turismo has reached the 10-year milestone. Compared to the last few editions I attended, Bernina GT 2025 was fully focused on the actual hillclimb instead of celebrating the whole International St. Moritz Automobile Week. In fact the original hillclimb race was part of that event, which consisted of a rally, the kilometer race, a skill race, a concours d'elegance and, as a conclusion, the hillclimb race and was only held in 1929 and 1930. Since 2021 BGT's organizers decided to celebrate the whole International St. Moritz Automobile Week of those two years with a selection of events which recalled the original ones. Even though the whole week wasn't celebrated in 2025 it was still nice to have the Bernina back after a year's break.
Bernina Gran Turismo takes place on a section of the original route specifically closed to traffic, with the hilclimb course starting from La Rösa (1,871 m above sea level) and ending up on the actual Bernina Pass (2,328 m) after a total of 5.9 km. Participants can either register for the event in a competitive form or decide to participate in the regularity race, where the ranking is stipulated based on who manages to better respect the speed average set by organizers.
