The Minnesota Wild and the City of Saint Paul have reached a major funding agreement that could transform one of the NHL’s busiest arenas. The proposed $600 million renovation of Grand Casino Arena would modernize the Wild’s home while also upgrading the surrounding downtown arena complex. Originally opened in 2000 as Xcel Energy Center, the arena has hosted NHL games, concerts, and large events for more than two decades. But like many arenas built in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it is beginning to show its age. Now, city leaders and the Wild are proposing a large-scale modernization that could extend the building’s lifespan for decades. The plan includes $450 million in upgrades to Grand Casino Arena and another $150 million for nearby venues, including Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Funding would come from a mix of team investment, city financing through an extended sales tax, and a proposed $200 million contribution from the State of Minnesota. If approved by the Minnesota Legislature, the renovation would update fan amenities, improve premium seating and event spaces, and help keep Saint Paul competitive for major sports and entertainment events.
