Description
It had been a long time since I made a date cake. Since my grandmother's ancestral house does not have an oven, I initially thought I wouldn't make any cake until I built a new wood oven. However, I later decided to make a cake using a pan in the stove top, mainly because of my brother's persistent requests. I decorated the date cake, which was made with dates, kithul jaggery, and cocoa powder, with cashew nuts and red cherries.
To accompany the pan-baked date cake, I made a custard using Rathnamalu bananas (red bananas). Serving bananas with many of our local delicacies is a tradition in various parts of our island. We use a variety of bananas in our traditional sweets, such as Kavum (oil cakes), Kokis (rosette cookies), and cake. Additionally, we enjoy bananas with our national dish, milk rice (Kiri bath). Sri Lanka has a strong traditional connection with bananas, primarily because the island is home to a wide variety of banana species. We boast around forty distinct types of bananas, each varying in shape, size, and taste. Some of these banana varieties are even used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat certain physical ailments. This is why I decided to prepare a banana custard to accompany the date cake instead of serving the usual bananas with it.
Grandmother's ginger coffee is the perfect treat to enjoy after an evening of date cake and tiffin. Every time I make date cake, our dear brother always dreams of having our grandmother's ginger coffee. That evening, we truly enjoyed the ginger coffee made by our grandmother's hands, which paired wonderfully with the date cake. Truly a match made in Heaven!
Love you All!
