Description
This timelapse captures NASA’s Artemis II Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft rolling out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 17, 2026, as crawler-transporter 2 carried the stack toward Launch Complex 39B. NASA says the trip covered about 4 miles and began at 7:04 a.m. EST, with the vehicle reaching the pad at 6:42 p.m. EST after a nearly 12-hour journey.
Artemis II will be NASA’s first crewed Artemis mission and the first crewed test flight of the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft. The mission will send Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency on an approximately 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth.
NASA is currently targeting Artemis II for launch from Kennedy Space Center no earlier than April 1, 2026. The mission is a major step toward future Artemis flights and long-term human exploration beyond low Earth orbit.
