Today we’re diving into a game called The Holiday Story, a super weird, kinda wholesome-but-also-not-at-all wholesome Christmas horror game on Steam that definitely wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card. If you’ve ever waited until the absolute LAST minute to buy a Christmas gift, this game is basically your intrusive thoughts turned into a full playable nightmare. You play as this dad who totally dropped the ball on holiday shopping and now has to scramble through a creepy, empty mall trying to snag a toy for his son before Christmas morning hits. Sounds simple… but the mall is NOT normal. Like, at all. The minute you step inside, it feels like the whole place is alive. The lights flicker, mannequins are staring straight into your soul, there’s this unsettling Christmas music looping in the background like it’s stuck between cute and cursed. You know those abandoned mall TikToks? Imagine that… but Santa might be hunting you. I swear this game had me stressed, laughing, and panicking all at the same time. It’s got that perfect blend of Christmas vibes and horror chaos that we live for on this channel. I seriously wasn’t expecting the atmosphere to hit this hard. The devs put in all these eerie details — random shadows moving, doors slamming for no reason, escalators that feel way too liminal. And the story kinda unravels as you explore: notes from missing employees, toys placed in weird spots, and a bunch of clues that hint the mall might not be as empty as it looks. There’s even this super uncomfortable mascot character that pops up when you least expect it. You know it’s bad when a holiday mascot is the scariest part of the mall. But honestly, that’s why I love playing these lowkey indie Steam horror games. They LOOK simple, but they catch you off-guard in the best (and worst) ways. And The Holiday Story does exactly that. Every step feels like, “Okay maybe I’m safe now,” and then BOOM — nope. You’re being chased by something that should not exist in a Christmas setting. Merry Crisis. If you’re new here, I’ve been jumping deep into these small dev horror games because they’re so creative and unpredictable. And this one is perfect for December vibes — Christmas lights, creepy stores, last-minute dad energy, mysterious lore, hidden scares, the whole package. It’s like Home Alone but if Kevin was replaced with a demon and the Wet Bandits were replaced with your own anxiety. The pacing is wild too. One minute you’re peacefully looking for your kid’s toy… the next minute you’re sprinting through a dark toy store hoping the shelves don’t come alive. Classic holiday spirit. So grab a snack, get comfy, turn your lights down just a little bit (but not too much, this game gets weird), and hang out with me as we try to get this poor dad through the most chaotic Christmas Eve ever.
