Description
We now arrive at perhaps the most influential, most discussed, and most far-reaching figure in this entire thousand-year story — the thinker later generations called "the Greatest Master."
Ibn Arabi (560–638 Hijri) was born in Murcia, in the brilliant civilization of Muslim Spain, and educated in Seville, one of the great centers of learning of his age. He traveled across North Africa and the East before settling in Damascus. The author of hundreds of works, he cast a shadow over eight centuries of philosophy — studied, debated, and drawn upon across the Muslim world and beyond.
This episode is an introduction to the man and his significance:
- His life, travels, and astonishing scholarly output
- Why he became one of the most debated figures in intellectual history — and how balanced scholars have read his difficult, specialized vocabulary
- His central contribution: gathering the scattered insights of earlier thinkers into a single, systematic philosophical framework
- The precise concept he named and developed
- The firm philosophical boundary he insisted upon throughout — between the Creator and all created reality
This is the turning point of our series. Everything before Ibn Arabi leads toward him; much of what follows is a response to him. That is why we devote several episodes to his thought.
📚 Sources: the documented biography of Ibn Arabi and the broad framework of his thought, as presented across the scholarly tradition. His two major works — Fusus al-Hikam and al-Futuhat al-Makkiyyah — are explored in the episodes that follow.
This series presents each thinker's contribution with transparency and care. No claim without a source.
🌙 In our next episode, we open the first of his great works and read his profound chapter on the wisdom of the Prophet.
