Description

This video contains scenes that may not be suitable for people who suffer from epilepsy. Please keep this in mind if you intend to watch the video. When Yars' Revenge game out on the Atari 2600, you'd of been forgiven for thinking that it was a port of a quite quirkly arcade game, but no. The game started off on consoles and you'd not think from the visuals that you're a mutated spacefaring fly alien at war with an enigmatic alien race that destroyed one of your recently colonised worlds, but that's the premise. Armed with your innate ability to fire blasters of energy and the zorlon cannon, your task is to destroy the many Qotile ships in the Razak system (a name I may have mistated as the Radox system during my playthrough) until you run out of lives. The Qotile blast projectives at you from their ship and a missile while will forever try to home on you but can't destroy you in the strange mist that is the Neutral Zone. Whether you blast the Qotile shields away or eat them, you need to reach the Qotile vessel to steal its energy, whereupon you transfer it to the zorlon cannon which can detonate the enemy craft, starting the cycle all over again. Yars' Revenge is a strange game indeed, both in visuals and gameplay, but it makes more sense when you know the premise. What's more, it was a very fun game, as is this port for the Game Boy Colour. With enhanced visuals and a password system, this version does a good job of retaining what made the original good while building upon it. It's far from the strangest Atari 2600 game out there - Gorf exists, after all - and it hasn't quite endured the test of time other games have, but it lingers on at the edges of pop culture through it being just so very, very strange. So, what's next? It's time to play the second entry in a series I started nine years ago. Without further ado, we shall once again become the Master Chief and do battle with the Covanent and Flood to hopefully save humanity in Halo 2 Anniversary. See you next LP!
