Description

Usually, people come to Londolozi with a checklist of the Big Five. This week, I decided to do the exact opposite. We set out on a dedicated "Birding Mission" into the southwestern grasslands with a very specific, slightly quirky goal: Deliberately try NOT to see any of the Big Five. I was hunting for two unique, uncommon birds—potential lifers for me. But the bush had a very different, much more ironic plan for our afternoon. Inside This Unintentional "Big Five" Drive: The Birding Bust: Our search for rare lifers at the waterhole was immediately sabotaged by a massive herd of frolicking Buffalo (Big Five #1). Accidental Ticks: While checking nearby pans for our feathered targets, we accidentally tripped over two more of the Big Five without even trying. The Shingi Male: We made our way toward Shingi Dam and found the Shingi Male Leopard in a spectacular mood, rolling around in the soft river sand of the Maxabane. The Grand Slam: Just as we were pulling back into camp—mission failed—we completed the Full Big Five in a single drive. It turns out that when you stop looking for the icons, they decide to follow you home. Whether you're here for the "lifers" or the legends, this drive was a reminder that you don't choose the narrative at Londolozi—the bush chooses it for you. Watch Now!
